Volleyball loses at Pitt, misses Big East tournament

USF volleyball will miss the Big East tournament for the first time since the Bulls' first year in the conference, missing out on the final spot in the eight-team field with a loss at Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The Bulls (11-16, 7-7) finished with a better conference record than a year ago, when they were the tournament's eighth seed, but they finished tied for eighth in the standings with Pittsburgh, which took the final berth with the head-to-head advantage. USF, which has just two seniors in its regular rotation, finishes the season at home Wednesday against Florida A&M.

USF coach Claire Lessinger earned her 100th career win Saturday at West Virginia, becoming the fourth Bulls head coach to reach the milestone. USF is 100-127 in her eight seasons and 50-61 in Big East play.

Notes: Volleyball to play home games at Rec Center

With the Corral unavailable as the Sun Dome undergoes a $35 million renovation this fall, USF volleyball will play its home matches at the USF Rec Center.

USF had released its 2011 volleyball schedule a month ago -- the Bulls open the season Aug. 26 at New Mexico, with the home opener Sept. 2 against Eastern Kentucky -- but hadn't identified a home court for the team. USF coach Claire Lessinger had initially hoped the Corral (inside the outer perimeter of the Sun Dome) could be still used during the arena's renovations, but they'll move just a few hundred feet to the Rec Center instead.

And while USF hasn't released its men's or women's soccer schedules to the media or posted them on USF's official site, I can now share the schedules for both teams because they were on a pocket schedule I picked up ... at the athletic department today. ... Read more

Gainesville standout commits to USF volleyball

USF volleyball has picked up a commitment toward its 2012 class in Gainesville middle blocker Kayla Bivins, and her commitment could wind up having an impact on the Bulls' football recruiting class.

"I liked the campus, and the coaches are awesome. I get along with them so well," said Bivins, a 5-foot-11 rising senior who chose the Bulls over offers from Texas Tech, Winthrop, Florida Atlantic and Florida International. "It's where I wanted to go. I don't want to go far, and it's the best fit for me."

Bivins is in Orlando this week competing in AAU nationals as a member of the Gainesville Athletic Club (GAC) 17 Black team -- tonight is the event's championship match. You can check out an eight-minute highlight video showing her play from Gainesville High School here. She said one of her strengths on the court is being an emotional leader and positive influence on her teammates. ... Read more

Hall class includes Henry, Dobras and, yes, Hopper

fergus.jpgYears before USF actually had an Athletics Hall of Fame, one of the highlights for anyone perusing the wall of USF All-Americans in the main athletic facility was stumbling upon the head shot of soccer standout Fergus Hopper, left. So while there is no shortage of familiar names in the third class for USF's Athletic Hall of Fame -- the first football inductee in defensive back Anthony Henry, basketball's Radenko Dobras, volleyball standout Michelle Collier, current softball assistant Monica Triner -- I'm intrigued to meet Hopper and learn his story.

USF's official site has a good writeup on the new class, announced during Saturday's BullsFest event, so I'll defer to a link to their story. We'll have a lot more on the inductees in advance of their enshrinement this fall.

Sun Dome transition: The trailers are back!

115_0649_1.jpgSomewhere, Jim Leavitt is smiling and doesn't know why.

The beloved portable trailers, the nostalgiac embodiment of USF football's humble early days, are back on campus this week, popping up as the temporary homes for the Bulls' basketball, volleyball, ticketing and Sun Dome staff while the arena undergoes major renovations over the next six to eight months.

Several trailers have been set up on Sycamore Drive, immediately east of USF's new football practice facility, with another now parked on the north side of the Sun Dome. Basketball staff will be able to move into their new offices in the Muma Basketball Center on the south side of the arena when that new facility is completed in the next two months. ... Read more

Links and notes: Back to Vero on Saturday

Lots of links and notes to catch up on while I'm back in Tampa -- I'll drive back over to Vero Beach on Saturday morning to see USF's first football scrimmage of the fall. Skip Holtz has said he'll make his initial decisions as to depth charts, position changes and freshmen redshirting based on what he sees there, so it's a big opportunity for players to show what they've been working toward.

-- Got the Sports Illustrated college football preview in the mail Thursday, and SI is projecting USF to go 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the Big East for a sixth-place finish. SI has four USF opponents ranked in its preseason top 25 -- No. 7 Florida, No. 15 Miami, No. 16 Pittsburgh and No. 18 Cincinnati. ... Read more

Volleyball: Bulls sweep Cards to win 6th straight

Two volleyball posts in a row?! USF picked up a huge home win on Friday, extending its win streak to six matches with a three-game sweep of Louisville.

The Bulls (16-6, 8-3) have now matched their best conference win total in five seasons in the Big East, with three more league matches left to play. Louisville (14-10) entered the match with the same 7-3 conference record as USF, but the Bulls prevailed, 25-14, 25-20, 25-21.

USF is now alone in fourth in the Big East standings, and the Bulls have their final home Big East match on Sunday against Cincinnati, which is 9-1 in conference and sits in second place behind Notre Dame (10-0).

Volleyball: Dad follows USF freshman from afar

It's a big weekend for USF volleyball, with its final home Big East matches against Louisville and Cincinnati, and that it a good time for a feature in Friday's Times on redshirt freshman middle blocker Caitlyn Breen, who has stepped in as a starter this fall and helped the Bulls to a 13-6 record.

Breen's father, Matt, is working in Afghanistan on a private military contract to help train the Afghani border patrol, but being 8,000 miles from home hasn't kept him from following his daughter's matches online. Thanks to online technology like Skype and Oovoo, the Breen family can keep in touch with Matt much better than when he first started working overseas a decade ago.

The credit for this story has to go to Maile Keeney in USF's sports information department, who wrote a great story that appeared in the Bulls football game program for the West Virginia game last week. Thanks again to Keeney and to the Breen family for their help with the story.

USF women's soccer upsets West Virginia, 2-1

A big weekend for USF athletics continued Sunday, with women's and men's soccer and volleyball picking up victories in Big East competition.

Women's soccer might have the most impressive win, getting a 2-1 home upset of a West Virginia team that had been picked to win the Big East's American division in the league's preseason poll. The Mountaineers lost just one conference match last season, and had beaten the Bulls 2-0 in all four previous meetings.

USF's first goal came from freshman Alexandra "Boo" Eagle, with Noelle Pineiro getting her team-high sixth goal for the game-winner. The Bulls have four home games over the next two weekends before finishing the regular season with four conference games on the road. ... Read more

USF volleyball hosts top teams for Tampa Twice

Twice College volleyball's best teams will convene here in December when the NCAA Final Four is held at the St. Pete Times Forum, and this weekend offers a sneak peak at that talent level as USF hosts the Tampa Twice tournament, with three top-10 programs joining the Bulls in the Sun Dome.

"The strategy behind scheduling is giving your team the opportunity to pull off some upsets," said Bulls coach Claire Lessinger, whose team faces No. 3 Florida on Friday night, with No. 4 Washington and No. 9 Minnesota also in town. "I know we're ready for the challenge, to see as a measuring stick where we are with the big boys." ... Read more
