Another gone: Pelphrey staying in Mobile
South Alabama coach John Pelphrey, who had met with Doug Woolard on March 16 about USF's coaching vacancy, said Monday that he's no longer interested in leaving his current position.
"I'm not a candidate for any job," he told the Mobile Register's Kim Shugart on Monday morning, addressing speculation that had linked him not only to USF but to the opening at his alma mater, Kentucky.
Pelphrey, who was an assistant at Florida under Billy Donovan before going to South Alabama, and Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall were thought to be two of the top candidates to replace Robert McCullum. Winthrop told Woolard on Sunday that he was not interested in pursuing the Bulls' job. With Pelphrey out, Woolard may now recast his nets for another young coach or turn to an established former coach such as Pete Gillen, Fran Fraschilla or Mike Jarvis.
