Another round of USF links ...

August

The first football practice of fall is just six hours away, though I'm thinking the weather could become a problem -- Weather.com shows a 40 percent chance of rain between 4 and 6 p.m. ... which would be Florida in August. This is another reason they practice in the mornings the rest of the week. Again, lots of links to share, so getting them out of the way ...

-- Teeng Akol, released from his scholarship at USF after not being admitted into school, is moving quickly. According to several reports, he'll visit Nebraska today; ZagsBlog.net writes that he's likely headed to Oklahoma State. Speaking of big men not coming to USF, CardChronicle.com writes that 7-foot-2 John Riek, who'd considered USF as well as the NBA, has reportedly committed to Cincinnati. We'd mentioned the possibility of that very school here last month ...

-- Tom Dienhart loves -- loves -- dropping names for coaching vacancies that don't exist. Loved doing at Sporting News, and loves it now writing for Rivals.com. So before the season has started, Dienhart has Jim Leavitt on a list of three potential candidates to succeed Kirk Ferentz at Iowa should Ferentz depart. Just name-dropping, but something that could come back in December. Leavitt cut his coaching teeth at Iowa as a graduate assistant, so it's certainly a possibility, with less connections but more prestige than Kansas State when the Wildcats had their vacancy.

-- Interesting blog read from a college student, Greg Meyer, who spent the summer working with USF strength coach Ronnie McKeefery as an intern in strength and conditioning. It's a perspective you don't get to read often, from inside the weight room ...

-- Really good column by the Louisville Courier-Journal's Rick Bozich, talking about how the Big East's best coaches seem to win, then bolt for jobs elsewhere. He points out astutely that the Big East is the only BCS league without a head coach who's won a national championship ...

-- The Orlando Sentinel ranks the top 25 stadiums in the state of Florida -- fun for water-cooler talk -- and Raymond James Stadium is No. 4. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium tops the list, followed by Daytona International Speedway and Doak Campbell in Tallahassee. The St. Pete Times Forum (ching!) makes it in at No. 9, Al Lang is No. 12, UCF's new Bright House Stadium is No. 19 and, no, the Sun Dome didn't make the cut.

-- The Arkansas Democrat Gazette offers an early look at the final college football poll, putting USF No. 22, one of two ranked Big East teams, behind No. 10 West Virginia. ... again, USF really doesn't have 20 starters back, even counting kickers.

-- We didn't do a hey-the-Bulls-are-starting-practice-today story, but the Lakeland Ledger did.

-- Those Jim Leavitt comments about Rich Rodriguez continue to pop up everywhere with kind links back to the blog. Today they made it to the Detroit Free Press, whose readers have some lively comments ...
