Anyone? Picks go decidely against USF upset
On Thursday, I linked to the New York Post and wrote that you guys should count them among those picking a USF upset against Florida State on Saturday. Frequent commenter WouldYouKindly pointed something out: "I didn't realize that there were others besides them giving USF a chance....outside of the fanbase."
WYK is very correct. USF is usually a trendy upset pick, even as a heavy underdog, but checking around the web tonight, I've found a ton of expert picks, and zero -- none -- are taking the Bulls to pull the upset, with few even picking USF to beat the 14-point spread against them. Most people think of Matt Grothe when they think of USF, so without him, they just don't think much of the Bulls.
-- The Sporting News' panel of six experts all take FSU -- none has USF scoring more than 20 points, and only Matt Hayes has USF losing by less than 11 points.
-- SI.com's Stewart Mandel picks the Bulls to lose 28-20.
-- Rivals/Yahoo's panel of five experts all pick FSU, and the fan voting has 98 percent picking the 'Noles.
-- NBCsports.com takes FSU to win 38-17.
-- The Orlando Sentinel's Mike Bianchi likes FSU to win by 30 points.
-- CBSsports.com's panel of five all picked FSU as well.
That's 21 picks I could find, and all of them are picking FSU to win as expected. So if Bulls coach Jim Leavitt wants to trot out the well-worn "nobody gave us a chance" card this week, he's not really exaggerating.
