Baseball: USF bullpen lets another slip away

Staked to a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning of Sunday's game at St. John's, USF's bullpen slowly led the Red Storm back in the game, and after allowing single runs in four of the last five innings, the Bulls lost 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth.

The Bulls (22-26, 13-8 in Big East) dropped to fifth in the Big East standings, one game behind St. John's (32-14, 14-7). A leadoff walk in the ninth caught up to closer Ray Delphey, as a stolen base and sacrifice fly put the winning run at third base with one out. An RBI single down the left-field line gave St. John's the walk-off victory.

USF continues to be an entirely different team on the road in Big East play -- the Bulls are 10-2 at home in conference games, matching the second-best mark in the league, but they're 3-6 on the road. USF has six conference games left before the Big East tournament, with the final series at Red McEwen Field this coming weekend against Connecticut, then the final series at Pittsburgh. Those two teams are a combined 31-8 in Big East play, both in the top three of the league standings.
