Baseball: West Virginia earns trip to Clearwater
I will be spending a considerable amount of time this week at the Big East baseball tournament in Clearwater, and if the last weekend of the regular season is any indication, it should be an exciting week.
Take West Virginia, which I mistakenly left out of the battle for the final spot in the tournament in this morning's post. The Mountaineers, down 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth of their final game, got a walk-off home run for a 3-2 win that knocked Notre Dame out of the field. West Virginia is just 10-17 in Big East play, but the Mountaineers are dangerous -- they've won seven of nine, bouncing back nicely from a woeful 3-15 start to conference play.
That means win or lose, USF will have a tough draw in Thursday's second round, facing either two-time defending regular-season champ Louisville or that hot West Virginia team. First, the Bulls face fourth-seeded St. John's at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Your complete Wednesday rundown: third-seeded Pittsburgh and sixth-seeded Rutgers at 10, then second-seeded Connecticut and seventh-seeded Cincinnati at 1, then Louisville-West Virginia at 5 and USF-St. John's at 8. If you remember last year's tournament, you know this is all weather permitting.
We'll be blogging live from all the USF games ...
