Basketball: Joneses keeping up with each other
Big feature in Saturday's paper on USF guard Dominique Jones, the close bond he has with his father, Norman, and the relationship he's working to build with the mother he barely knew growing up. The story was originally going to run for Wednesday's paper, but with all the Alex Rodriguez craziness, we knew it could get buried, so we bumped it to Saturday, to advance USF's game at No. 1 Connecticut.
Kudos, first of all, to Travis Bell at 10 Connects, who had a solid story two weeks ago on Jones and the bond between father and son. I've been wanting to write something personal this season on Jones, simply because there hasn't been a real profile written on him in his two years with the Bulls. His reporting got the ball rolling on this story, so thanks again for his work. Extra thanks to both Dominique and Norman, too, for taking a moment to stop for Times photographer Brian Cassella's photograph after Wednesday's frustrating loss to Georgetown.
Lots of interesting notes that didn't get to make it into the Jones story -- I always kid about having "Deleted Paragraphs!!!" as if stories came out like movies on DVDs. At one point at Lake Wales, Jones had a recruiting visit lined up to go to Pittsburgh (he also considered Wake Forest and Boston College) but decided it was too far from home and said no to the Panthers. Just imagine Pitt this season if you added Jones to their lineup.
I have a busy weekend -- today was my son Riley's birthday, so we've got parties and visits to relatives and so on, but I'll try to get a post or two up in the next day or so ...
