Big week ahead for Bulls signee Nieto
The big news today is the football team's Fan Fest from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium, but first I want to pass along a baseball update, as it's a crucial week for USF because major-league teams have a Friday deadline to sign their draft picks.
A decision could come even sooner for Plantation American Heritage catcher Adrian Nieto, who signed with USF but was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the fifth round in June. The Washington Post reports that the Nats have set a self-imposed tentative deadline of Monday for Nieto because they still have three higher draft picks who remain unsigned and the focus would shift to them later in the week. The Washington Times reported that the Nationals have offered a signing bonus of $185,000, on par with other fifth-round draft picks, but Nieto is seeking a larger bonus.
Nieto has been playing in the Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, N.M., with a team called the Florida Legends. If Nieto doesn't sign with the Nationals, it'd be a huge recruiting get for USF coach Lelo Prado. Stay tuned ...
