Bulls baseball loses out on catcher Nieto
Lots to report from Fan Fest today, where a strong crowd estimated at 3,500 fans lined up for autographs and pictures with Jim Leavitt and players.
But first, I have news on the baseball front. We'd posted Sunday morning that the Washington Nationals had set a Monday deadline for signing fifth-round pick Adrian Nieto, a USF signee. The Nats got the deal done Sunday, luring Nieto away from the Bulls with a $376,000 signing bonus, plus another $125,000 he can use for college tuition down the road.
Again, Nieto was ranked by some publications as the second-best prep catcher in the country, so Lelo Prado and his staff had very limited hopes of actually getting him to campus. Nieto got a signing bonus nearly double the slot for a fifth-round pick, so it's no slight against the Bulls, though he would have been a huge addition to their lineup next spring.
