Bulls get passports, head to Toronto
USF's football team heads off to Toronto this afternoon after a final on-campus practice Monday morning in preparation for Saturday's International Bowl against Northern Illinois.
One major hurdle has been cleared, as USF got passports for its travel party in time for the international trip. USF coach Jim Leavitt said that one player, junior running back Jamar Taylor, could not get a passport and will not make the trip, but Taylor has been limited by a knee injury and didn't play in the last month of the season.
Leavitt said that junior receiver Jason Sherman, who has not caught a pass this season, tore an Achilles tendon in practice last week and will not play, though he will make the trip with the team.
Junior guard Zach Hermann, who has missed the second half of the season with a bulging disc in his neck, will not play, Leavitt said, adding that junior Jake Sims is "doubtful" as he recovers from a late-season concussion.
True freshman cornerback Kavyon Webster missed about 10 days with a bad case of the flu, Leavitt said, but he's expected to play in the bowl game.
Leavitt said nearly all of the team's injured players will take part in the bowl trip, though senior receiver Colby Erskin, out with a season-ending knee injury, will not travel with the team.
BRING A SWEATER: USF will play in the Rogers Centre, so the weather won't be an issue on game day, but the Bulls are still bracing for a chilly five days between now and kickoff. Monday's low in Toronto was 13 degrees according to weather.com, with a strong chance of snow. There's also a good chance of snow on Saturday, when the high will be 21 degrees with a low of 13.
"I told them it might be a little different up there than here," Leavitt said. "The sun will be out, but it might be a little cooler."
USF is practicing indoors all week, first at the University of Toronto, then in the Rogers Centre.
Leavitt said he went to Stockholm, Sweden, with his staff for a week about five years ago as part of a football clinic.
