Bulls lose RB Shaw to thumb injury

March

USF's spring depth at running back took another hit Wednesday as sophomore Marcus Shaw suffered what's believed to be a broken thumb during practice, leaving the Bulls with three healthy scholarship running backs.

Shaw, who played mostly on special teams as a true freshman last fall, had been progressing well this spring, drawing praise from offensive coordinator Todd Fitch as recently as Monday.

"Marcus is growing up," Fitch said. "Marcus showed signs last year of being a very positive player for us. He's become a little more consistent. He's still a freshman, but he's shown some big-play capability this spring in 11-on-11 drills. He has an open-field ability that should give us a little bit more big plays."

Shaw had his left hand in a hard cast and his arm in a sling as he came off the practice field Wednesday afternoon; he is expected to meet today with a hand speciaiist to determine the severity of the injury. The Bulls are already without sophomore Bradley Battles, who is recovering from knee surgery after an injury in December, leaving juniors Demetris Murray and Darrell Scott and sophomore Dontae Aycock for the remainder of spring drills.
