Bulls miss on juco stars Pena, Carradine

Today's the opening of the junior college midyear signing period -- not as worshipped as the window in February, of course, but could have been a significant day for USF in landing talents who could arrive on campus next month.

Skip Holtz and his staff were close on two top defensive recruits, but have missed on both, as defensive end Cornellius "Tank" Carradine of Butler County chose Florida State on Wednesday, and defensive tackle Gilbert Pena of ASA Institute in Brooklyn signed with Mississippi.

The Bulls are still expected to get one fax today, as linebacker Mike Jeune, a close friend and former teammate of Bulls linebacker Sam Barrington, will be signing today. Once he finishes his fall classes, he's expected to join the Bulls in January and will compete for the starting strongside linebacker position this spring.

Quarterbacks Matt Floyd and Stevie Weatherford and linebacker Antoine Pozniak are also expected to enroll for spring classes and join the team next month, giving them a head start on the 2011 season.
