Bulls move 12 baseball games back on campus

Red McEwen Field, home of USF baseball since 1967, just got one more month on the job.

The Bulls have moved 12 home baseball games scheduled for Steinbrenner Field and the University of Tampa back on campus, as construction of a new baseball stadium for 2011 won't start as early as expected due to permitting delays. Next weekend's home series against Notre Dame was expected to be the Bulls' farewell to the Red, but now USF will play almost its entire home schedule on campus, save for a final series against Connecticut on May 14-16 at Steinbrenner.

It's good news for coach Lelo Prado, who won't have to spend the second half of this season shuttling back and forth across town for home games. The stadium is still expected to be complete in time for the 2011 baseball season. Under the current schedule, the final series played at Red McEwen Field will be April 30 to May 2 against Seton Hall.

USF (5-12) hosts Mercer for a three-game series this weekend, and the rebounding Bulls have certainly found their bats -- after averaging just 3.4 runs per game in a 1-7 start, they've averaged 9.0 in the last seven.

-- Just a reminder that USF's women's basketball team opens the postseason tonight in Gainesville, facing the Gators in the opening round of the Women's NIT. USF has confirmed that juniors Sequoyah Griffin and Dominique English -- indefinitely suspended last month with senior Janae Stokes for a violation of team rules -- won't be back with the team next season.
