Bulls in Sweet 16? 408,789 brackets think so
If USF can beat Ohio on Sunday night for its third NCAA Tournament win in five days, the Bulls will have done something few saw coming in reaching the Sweet 16 as a No. 12 seed.
Actually, lots and lots of people thought it might happen. ESPN.com's Bracket Challenge has grown huge enough that 408,789 brackets have USF in the Sweet 16, according to ESPN. That seems like a lot -- it's roughly the population of the city of Miami -- it is, until you remember that 6.45 million brackets were submitted this year, which puts the USF folks at about 6.3 percent.
Given such a large sample of opinions, there are large amount of fans who think the Bulls could go a lot farther than just the Sweet 16 -- ESPN says that 10,362 brackets have USF in the Final Four (about 1 for every 39 with them in the Sweet 16) and if the Bulls do the unthinkable and rattle off five more wins to win the national championship, then there will still be 2,099 brackets that saw it coming.
ESPN didn't require fans to pick the First Four games, so many surely waited until after USF had beaten California on Wednesday night. Still, if the Bulls can beat those Bobcats on Sunday night, congrats in advance to the 408,789 of you that thought it was going to happen.
