Bye-week rest has Bulls close to injury-free

The Bulls returned to practice Sunday after two days off at the end of a bye week, and the week of relative rest helped Skip Holtz's team get some key players on defense back healthy and returning to practice.

Holtz said linebackers Reshard Cliett (who missed most of the last two games with a hamstring) and Tashon Whitehurst (who missed the last game with a knee injury) were back at practice, as was safety Jon Lejiste.

"It was great to see those guys running around full speed," Holtz said. "This open date has been very good as far as getting some of the bumps and bruises, going through a long camp and then six straight weeks. Having an opportunity to get refreshed mentally and physically is a huge thing for us right now, especially with what we've been through the last four weeks."

Holtz had talked last week about shaking up his depth chart after grading three days of practice reps, but he wasn't ready to share any tweaks to the lineup on either side of the ball Sunday night, saying he might later in the week when potential changes look more definite.

"I'd still say it's a work in progress," said Holtz, again only pointing to the shift of redshirt freshman Chris Garye from safety to linebacker. "There's a couple of guys we moved around, but I can't say any of them are definite, things that will show up Saturday. We'll be more than happy to talk about it as we get closer to the game, but right now, not enough definite to see we're doing this or that."

GOOD HANDS: Holtz has used three different punt returners this season, but said his priority remains finding a player who can catch the ball consistently, remembering last year's Louisville game, where the Cardinals' first points came after Victor Marc fumbled a Louisville punt.

"The guy that's caught the ball the most consistently, in practice and in games, has been Andre Davis," he said.
