Catwalk hijinks! We invade the Trop ...

My editor had a simple question: "Could a football hit one of the catwalks at Tropicana Field?"

We had fun getting the answer, and the Rays were nice enough to let us find out last week. So on Friday morning, I met up with photographer Lance Rothstein and the strongest leg I could find, that of former USF goalkeeper Mike Pepper, the morning-show radio host on 1010 CBS Sports.

The easy answer? No, the ball won't hit the catwalks during Saturday's game ... unless somebody really wants to. Pepper doesn't consider it a strong punt unless he literally sees stars afterwards, but his leg came through -- from the field of play, he twice punted the ball over the "D" catwalk in centerfield and hit it squarely once. Unintentionally, he got the ball to bounce off the roof of the restaurant in centerfield and land right in the rays touch tank in right-center. No, the rays weren't hurt, but yes, Matt Grothe can get one in there if he just aims for the back left corner of the end zone in right field ... and really, really overthrows it. Anyway, here is the story from Tuesday's paper, and a link to enjoy the video ...
