Ciao! Buckley writes from Rome

Buck USF senior forward Melvin Buckley is writing a diary for The Bulletin during the Bulls' 12-day foreign tour of Italy. Here's his first entry ...

"What more can I say" in the words of the great Jay-Z, who just so happens to be my favorite artist.  He speaks of Italy in his songs, but his words weren't actually able to capture the sheer beauty of this history-rich country.  I mean it's where the gladiators fought, Caesar was killed, Empires ruled.

The Sistine Chapel and the Vatican, which we were able to experience, were simply breathtaking.  I was able to get so much appreciation for history in just two days, it's amazing. It all makes sense - the classes, the books, everything you see on television - actually in real life in front of you.  You’re living and breathing the Italian way of life.  Hey, "When in Rome, do as the Romans," right?

I've met more Americans then I thought I would over here.  I guess it’s a holiday in Rome, plus it's one of the more well-traveled cities in the world, but everywhere you look somebody is asking where you’re from, with their stories about where they are from and why they are here.  Makes you appreciate people a lot more when you’re the foreigner.  An interesting fact I learned before I came here was that I would be the first person in my family to travel out of the country.  Who would've thought a kid out of Chicago would be chillin' with the Pope. Anything can happen, and I'll keep you posted on what happens with me.
