Conference Scorecard: Big Ten, Pac-10 busy
The second week of the college football season brings eight more games pitting teams from different BCS conferences, with a big presence from the Big Ten and the Pac-10.
After one week, the Big 12 has the best mark against other BCS schools, with a perfect 3-0 record, thanks to impressive wins by Oklahoma State, Missouri and Baylor. The SEC is close behind at 3-1, its only blemish Georgia's loss to the Cowboys. The only winless leagues were the Big East, which went 0-1, and the ACC, which had a rough start, losing all four games against other BCS conferences.
That leaves the Big Ten and Pac-10, who each went 1-1 last week but have much more on the line this week. The Big Ten has five games, led by No. 8 Ohio State hosting No. 3 USC and No. 7 Penn State hosting Syracuse. Michigan hosts No. 18 Notre Dame, Iowa is at Iowa State and Purdue is at Oregon, giving the Big Ten a chance to establish itself nationally with a strong weekend.
The Pac-10 has four such games, with USC as the obvious headliner. UCLA has a tough test at Tennessee -- the Bruins won 27-24 in Los Angeles last season -- and Stanford has a chance to drop Wake Forest to 0-2, with Oregon looking to rebound at home against Purdue.
For the Big East, Syracuse has a tall order at Penn State, and Connecticut has a chance to avenge last year's 38-12 loss to North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The Big East doesn't have many nonconference games against ranked opponents, so it's a prime opportunity for the league.
We'll check back Sunday to see how each league fared over the weekend ...
