Cue the dominoes: Tubby to Minnesota

Kentucky coach Tubby Smith is taking the Minnesota job, according to ESPN.com and SI.com, and that hire could create a ripple effect that impacts USF's hiring process.

Kentucky is obviously an enticing job for South Alabama's John Pelphrey, a Wildcats alum whose jersey was retired after his career there. Would Kentucky hire a coach as young and largely unproven as Pelphrey? Would this opening -- and the potential for another after a Kentucky hire -- give Gregg Marshall pause as he talks with USF and Winthrop about this future?

With more than 20 Division I openings, each hire has an impact on others, and the three Big Ten openings (presuming Steve Alford to New Mexico is a done deal) are the big three in terms of being catalysts for the rest of the coaching moves. As of mid-afternoon, there's no word from either end of things of Marshall coming into Tampa to visit the USF campus ...
