'Dancing with the Stars' at Big East basketball?
Big East commissioner John Marinatto, talking with reporters at the conference's annual meetings in Ponte Vedra Beach on Monday, said he once hoped to bring one of reality TV's biggest hits to the Big East basketball tournament in New York.
Marinatto said in 2006, as interest in ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" was starting to boom, he had floated the idea of having the show's champions -- singer Drew Lachey and dance partner Cheryl Burke -- perform at halftime of the championship game during the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden.
"Drew Lachey, he would have come," Marinatto said. "He said 'I would have come. I would have loved to have done it. My wife's in her eighth month and I live in L.A. I can't take a chance, come to perform, then get the phone call.' Maybe in the future. It would be awesome."
Marinatto said he is "a big fan" of the ABC show, whose final performance of the season airs tonight, with Tampa's Erin Andrews, the ESPN sideline reporter, among three finalists.
"I just thought going black, all the lights out, spotlight on the floor, sold-out Madison Square Garden," he said. "And now, ladies and gentlemen, for your entertainment at halftime, this year's Dancing with the Stars champions, Drew Lachey and Cheryl Burke."
