Dominique Jones' decision: Let's test NBA waters

23

March

USF guard Dominique Jones will put his name in the NBA draft pool, while preserving the option to return to USF if it doesn't look as if he'll be a first-round draft choice. Jones, fresh off a junior season in which he averaged 21.4 points and led the Bulls to the postseason for the first time in eight years, sent a letter to the NBA seeking an application for the draft.

"I am supportive of Dominique and his decision to submit his name into the NBA draft," said Coach Stan Heath. "I will assist him in gathering information about his NBA status and help Dominique make the best decision in regards to his future."

Jones posted to his Facebook page earlier this month "it's time to make money now," but he quickly backtracked March 17 issuing a statement that he hadn't yet made up his mind. At that time, Heth said he would encourage Jones to put his name in the draft pool -- as Notre Dame's Luke Harangody did last spring before deciding to withdraw his name and return for his senior year. As long as underclassmen do not sign with an agent, they are free to withdraw by aMay 8 deadline and retain their eligibility, a significant difference between the NBA and NFL.

Heath planned at that time to consult with NBA executive vice president Stu Jackson and NBA general managers to give Jones the best information he can as to where he might be selected.
