Double your points? That's a first for Bulls

As all-time records go, it's a bit of a dubious honor -- for a basketball team to double its offensive output from one game to the next, it requires not only a great showing one night, but an impressively bad showing the previous game.

But after poring over linescores from 39 years of men's basketball at USF, we can confirm that never before have the Bulls scored twice as many points as their previous game, as they did in going from a 74-49 loss at Villanova to Saturday's 99-93 win against Providence. The Bulls have come within two points of doing so three times -- from 48 to 94 in 1976-77, from 53 to 104 in 1983-84 and from 47 to 92 in 1985-86.

The 50-point increase, however, isn't the biggest single-game improvement in Bulls history. That honor goes to the 1983-84 team, which saw a 51-point bump between its final two games, a 57-53 loss to Western Kentucky and a 104-86 win against Monmouth.

USF has had 12 instances where the Bulls have increased their scoring by at least 40 points, though only one had occurred between Big East games -- a 42-point rise in USF's first season in the league, going from a 50-47 loss to Georgetown and a 94-89 overtime loss to Seton Hall.

And just to warn the Bulls, having posted such a high number against Providence, they're in jeopardy of setting a more infamous honor, that being the biggest dropoff in USF history. As it stands, the mark to beat is 45 points, set on two occasions -- the 1982-83 Bulls went from a 117-73 win against Roosevelt (?!?) to a 72-61 win against Massachusetts, and the 1989-90 Bulls went from a 99-77 win against Augusta to a 91-54 loss to Florida.

As for scoring half as many points as the previous game, that's been done twice in Bulls history -- in 1981-82, USF went from 82 points to 39, and in 1993-94, the Bulls went from 82-40. Facing a DePaul team that's 1-15 in Big East play on Tuesday, you'd think the Bulls would be good for at least 60 points, but the Blue Demons have held two Big East opponents under 60 already this season ...
