Is Douglas next assistant to leave USF?
Defensive coordinator Wally Burnham might not be the only Bulls assistant leaving USF this week.
Defensive backs coach Troy Douglas, who just finished his third season on Jim Leavitt's staff, interviewed Tuesday for a defensive vacancy at North Carolina. He declined to comment Tuesday night, but he has strong connections to Butch Davis' staff in Chapel Hill.
Douglas was a teammate of UNC defensive coordinator Everett Withers at Appalachian State from 1983-85. Douglas was a receiver, Withers was a defensive back. The Tar Heels have lost three assistants in the past week, with linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen going to Auburn, tight ends coach Steve Hagen going to the Cleveland Browns and special-team coach John Lovett becoming defensive coordinator at Miami.
Douglas would be the third assistant gone from Jim Leavitt's 2008 staff. Offensive coordinator Greg Gregory was demoted and left last week to become offensive coordinator at South Alabama, and Burnham resigned Tuesday to become defensive coordinator at Iowa State.
