Draft: Barbosa to D'backs, signee Herget in 40th

For hours, it had been a quiet final day for USF baseball in the MLB draft, but the Bulls saw two picks late -- senior ace Andrew Barbosa went in the 36th round to the Diamondbacks (who took USF's Derrick Stultz yesterday) and interestingly, top USF signee Jimmy Herget, the right-hander from Jefferson, went in the final round to Atlanta.

Barbosa has been drafted three times before, but it's encouraging to see he'll have a shot at a pro career after taking a chance by coming back to USF after being drafted in 2010 coming off his first breakout season with the Bulls. Herget will have a chance at making USF's weekend rotation next season, so it'll be curious to see whether he gives much thought to the buzzer-beater drafting by the Braves, which won't likely command much of a signing bonus.

So your final tally for USF baseball: three 2012 pitchers and three signees drafted -- the question now is whether Lelo Prado can get catcher Levi Borders and Herget to campus this fall. It's doubtful the Bulls will get junior reliever Austin Adams (8th round, Angels) or signee Walker Lockett (4th round, Padres) in uniform for 2013.
