DT Marquis White commits to USF

North Carolina Tech defensive tackle Marquis White has verbally committed to USF, his high school coach said Monday.

White, a 6-foot-5 297-pounder, played at Orlando Olympia with current Bulls commitment Corian Hamilton and spent the last year at North Carolina Tech, a prep school in Charlotte. He had visited USF on Jan. 21, and made his final recruiting trip to Florida A & M over the weekend before picking the Bulls.

White also had North Carolina and Minnesota among his suitors.

"I think South Florida made him feel the most comfortable with the offer they gave him," said Tim Newman, White's high school coach at NC Tech. "He'll probably be playing on Sundays, he made a great impact here for us. A year or two from now, he'll be a fantastic player, he just has to mature into his position.

"This is a natural born athlete, like a freak of nature. He's got great size, he's fast, he's got great instincts. We had to tell him to stop hitting the quarterback in practice one day. They got a quality football player. It looks like that program is going in the right direction, getting guys like Marquis."

White has already graduated, according to his coaches, and could enroll in USF by this summer. White would be the Bulls fifth commitment from Orlando.

*In other recruiting news, while indications are Orlando QB Kevin Sousa may in fact keep his commitment and stay with Wake Forest (USF was reportedly in his final two), the Bulls will have to wait a little longer to hear where North Broward DE Tevin Westbrook is going. Westbrook was expected to announce his decision today, but according to, needs a little more time to decide.
