Eagles send Bulls home with 63-52 loss
Hoping to get back to .500 in conference play, USF instead dropped its second straight road game on Saturday night, falling 63-52 at Marquette to drop to 5-7 in Big East play. Here's a link to our full game story from Times correspondent Darryl Mellema.
The Bulls (15-9, 5-7) trailed by 14 points with 11 minutes to play and were able to cut that lead to six with six minutes left, but Marquette didn't let USF get any closer. Guard Dominique Jones, who averaged 35 points during USF's four-game winning streak, struggled from the field for the second straight game, scoring 16 points on 6-for-21 shooting. Center Jarrid Famous had a solid night, with 12 points (6-for-7 from the field) and 10 rebounds. Forward Gus Gilchrist played for the first time in more than two months, scoring seven points off the bench.
Marquette (16-8, 7-5) put four players in double figures and committed just five turnovers, which helped overcome USF's 40-27 rebounding advantage. The Golden Eagles have won five conferences games in a row. Here's the boxscore from ESPN.com
USF now returns home to face Cincinnati on Tuesday in what now looks like a must-win game if the Bulls want to stay in contention for the NCAA Tournament.
