Ex-USF center Rivas starts pro career in Dominican

Former USF center Alex Rivas, whose college career with the Bulls was limited by painful leg injuries, has begun his professional career back home in the Dominican Republic.

Rivas, who averaged 2.9 points and 3.5 rebounds in his two years with the Bulls from 2008-10, is playing for Titanes del Distrito Nacional, a team in the Dominican NBL -- Liga Nacional de Baloncesto. He had four points and seven rebounds in a game Sunday,and after four games is averaging 4.0 points and 4.0 rebounds.

He's the fourth member of the 2009-10 USF team to play professionally -- guard Dominique Jones was limited by injury this season but played as a rookie with the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks, guard Mike Mercer played 10 games in Canada for the Halifax Rainmen of the Premier Basketball League, and, according to Eurobasket, point guard Chris Howard played briefly in the Ukraine in December.
