Five Bulls assistants won't be back with Holtz
New USF coach Skip Holtz met with the assistants from Jim Leavitt's staff, and five full-time assistants -- including coordinators Mike Canales and Joe Tresey -- will not be retained.
Three other assistants -- offensive line coach Mike Simmonds, linebackers coach David Blackwell and special-teams coach John Hendrick -- will also not stay on as part of Holtz's staff.
Two assistants -- offensive line coach Larry Scott and defensive line coach Kevin Patrick, have been retained, while two others -- running backs coach Carl Franks and receivers coach Phil McGeoghan -- will stay on staff and be evaluated at a later date.
That leaves Holtz with five positions to fill as he builds his first staff at USF. A TV report in North Carolina said defensive line coach Vernon Hargreaves was joining his Bulls staff, and with Canales not returning, there's a strong chance that ECU co-offensive coordinator Todd Fitch will run his offense at USF. With Tresey gone, it makes sense that ECU defensive backs coach Rick Smith, who also carried the title of assistant head coach, could come to Tampa as well.
If Holtz goes outside the two programs for a linebackers coach or defensive coordinator, one possibility is former Marshall head coach Mark Snyder, who went up against Holtz the past five years in Conference USA. Snyder, 45, who held ECU to an average of 15.7 points in the last three meetings, said Sunday that he would be "very interested" in joining Holtz's staff.
-- New numbers! With seniors leaving, their jerseys are up for grabs. So Jon Lejiste shifts from No. 12 to take Nate Allen's old No. 5 in 2010, Evan Landi takes Theo Wilson's No. 9, Isaac Virgin grabs Landi's old No. 12 and lineman Steve Jacques takes No. 72. For you roster junkies, USF has also shared the jersey numbers for the four players who joined the team in January -- defensive end Brandon Wilkinson will take Aaron Harris' No. 98, defensive end Claude Davis takes Jason Pierre-Paul's No. 90, linebacker Curtis Weatherspoon will wear No. 13 and offensive lineman Austin Reiter will take No. 78.
-- Best number change of the week: Equipment manager Jeremy Lees goes from 2 to 3, as he and his wife Debbie welcomed son Owen Michael on Friday. Congratulations to the proud parents ...
