Fontanez blanks FAMU; Bulls play two Saturday
USF senior Randy Fontanez struck out eight Florida A&M batters in eight shutout innings, guiding the Bulls to an easy 5-0 victory over the Rattlers on Friday night. USF improves to 3-5 on the season, and Fontanez picks up his first win of the year.
With a strong chance of rain on Sunday afternoon, USF has shifted the final game of the series with Florida A&M to Saturday, with a doubleheader to be played at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the new ballpark.
-- More bad news for USF women's basketball, as the knee injury that took star guard Andrea Smith out of Friday's loss to Pittsburgh has been confirmed as a torn ACL. It's a serious setback for the Bulls' leading scorer and a second-team All-Big East selection -- without knowing the severity of the tear, it's hard to suggest a timetable, but it's reasonable to think Smith could return for at least the conference portion of her senior season. It's the same injury her twin sister Andrell suffered while they were both at Florida Gulf Coast College, so Andrea will have the motivation of knowing she's seen someone return to a high level of play after suffering a similar injury.
