Football season: Bulls' first practice at 3:30

Football season is upon us. USF had players report for preseason camp on Wednesday, and the Bulls take the field for their first practice on Thursday at 3:30 p.m., with four sessions on campus before they leave for Vero Beach on Sunday night.

We'll have updates from practice, of course, and while much of the transactional news came Wednesday, I'm sure there will be no shortage of notes from the opening practice. It looks like Skip Holtz will have even less two-a-day sessions than Jim Leavitt had in scaling back last season -- Holtz said Wednesday he didn't anticipate having more than one or two days with more than one full practice. Holtz said he doesn't think August is a good time to beat up a team physically -- if he wants to push a team that way, he said he's more likely to do so in spring, when the players have more time to recover.

-- One more walk-on we can share -- linebacker Chris Breit, a Plant graduate who was with the team as a freshman for about a month at the start of the 2008 season, is back on the roster. We wrote about him back in 2008, noting that he had a ridiculous 26 tackles for loss as a defensive end on Plant's state championship team in 2006.

-- Few more updates on players leaving the program -- impressed that receiver Patrick Richardson is graduating in just three years, finishing a degree in criminology this summer. He won't use his final two years of eligibility, but Holtz said he already has a job lined up. ... Running back Aston Samuels, who suffered a serious ankle injury in spring drills, has also graduated with a degree in communications. He said he has recovered enough that he's walking normally and should be able to jog soon. ... Receiver Jason Sherman, who is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, said he needs only one class to graduate and intends to finish his degree this fall.

-- Will get in an update this afternoon on all the new jersey numbers, but the online roster already shows that freshman QB Jamius Gunsby will No. 8, which of course was Matt Grothe's number the last four years. Looks like walk-on running back Joel Miller is trading in his No. 37 for No. 25. Holtz said he has two or three scholarships still available going into camp, so he may put an additional walk-on or two on scholarship, with Miller and kicker Eric Schwartz among the possibilities. ... Also, receiver Victor Marc is officially listed as a running back on the roster, and Isaac Virgin, all 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds of him, is now listed as a receiver.
