Football: Which jerseys will Bulls fans wear?
With the start of football practice now just 22 days away, there's a larger question to be asked as one generation of Bulls stars moves on to the NFL and another takes over at USF: Whose replica jersey will Bulls fans be wearing in the stands?
There certainly will be a lot of Matt Grothe's No. 8 and George Selvie's No. 95 still in the stands this fall, and current quarterback B.J. Daniels is arguably the favorite among current players. Both Bulls Heaven and Bulls Outfitter said Wednesday will have Daniels' No. 7, which doubles as the number for promising freshman defensive end Ryne Giddins.
Who else will fans be able to buy? Retailers have to buy the jerseys in bulk, so only a handful of players' numbers are typically available. Bulls Heaven's Jeffrey Neil Fox, who expects to have his new jerseys by the first week of August, said he ordered Nos. 7 and 1 (for safety Jerrell Young) on USF's recommendation.
Bulls Outfitter, meanwhile, has No. 7 available, as well as receiver Dontavia Bogan's No. 81 and the No. 55 worn by both guard Jeremiah Warren and linebacker Mike Lanaris. The store said it should soon have the No. 17, worn by receiver Sterling Griffin.
There's no harm in wearing a former player's jersey to games -- if you've been to a Bucs game, there's still a ton of Mike Alstott, Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks in the stands. What jersey will you be wearing this fall at Raymond James Stadium?
-- Good to see a few more USF fan blogs popping up -- there's a new one called Green, Gold, Bold doing positional previews going into football season. And FSU blog Plant the Spear did a Q&A with the Sentinel's Andrea Adelson, who mentioned USF and her expectations for the Bulls. "I think USF could be in for a bit of a rebuilding year," she says.
-- Skip Holtz did an interview with WSBT 960 AM radio in South Bend -- lots of interesting talk about next year's opener at Notre Dame and his feelings about that.
-- Speaking of Holtz, he ranks 19th nationally in terms of Twitter followers according to these rankings from LSU. He's over 3,700 now, but remember, he had like 3,000 when he got the USF job. Bulls fans should be good for at least as many followers as his East Carolina following, right? As always, you can follow this blog on Twitter at @gregauman.
-- I'm like two days behind on this, but the Mavericks officially signed Dominique Jones to his rookie contract -- more of a formality in the NBA, but his slotted salary should work out to about $1.9-million over two years, with team options for a third and fourth season. Jones and the Mavs play the Wizards tonight in his fourth game in the NBA summer league in Las Vegas.
-- Looks like USF softball coach Ken Eriksen has lost out on a top recruit, as Michigan's Alyssa McBride, a top slap-hitter, is backing out of a commitment to the Bulls to stay closer to home at Michigan State.
-- I don't link to a lot of Bleacher Report stories, but here's a bowl projection that has USF playing North Carolina in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, a notch up from the Bulls' last few bowl trips.
-- Few recruiting notes -- still waiting for a decision from Cape Coral DE/LB Edsel Caprice between USF and North Carolina ... Milton QB Matt Floyd is visiting Mississippi this weekend and should decide shortly after that, with the Rebels and USF among his top considerations.
