Former 'Whiz Kid,' USF baseball coach Robin Roberts dies

Robin Roberts, the former major league pitcher who coached USF to Sun Belt conference baseball titles in 1981 and '82, died at his Temple Terrace home on Thursday.

Roberts, a Hall of Famer for the Philadelphia Phillies, won 286 games in the majors. He became coach at USF before the 1977 season and led the Bulls for nine years, including their first NCAA tournament appearance in 1982.

"Today is a sad day for the entire USF family and we send our deepest condolences to his relatives and family," USF athletic director Doug Woolard said in a news release.  "In his honor, our baseball program will honor Robin and celebrate his phenomenal contributions to the America's pasttime next weekend during our final homestand against UConn."
