Four spring walk-ons survive to summer roster
USF football released a new post-spring roster update Friday -- impressively no scholarship players have transferred out of the program yet, though 10 of the 14 walk-ons who joined the program this spring are now off the roster.
The four that are sticking around are at positions commonly associated with special-teams play -- linebacker Sharly Azard and defensive backs Thanasi Mihalakos, Brandon Salinas and Dennis Wideman. Both quarterbacks who joined the team this spring, Eric Johnson and Glenn Fagan, are now off the roster.
The only other walk-on dropped from the team was freshman kicker Austin Atkins, who joined the team last fall as the Bulls sought depth after the summer injury to starter Maikon Bonani.
-- Former USF guard Dominique Jones is working out for the Boston Celtics today and, according to his father, still making up his mind on whether to stick with his NBA plans or return to USF for his senior year. For what it's worth, ESPN.com's Chad Ford has released his first mock NBA draft, and he does not have Jones going in the first round (or in his next-best five players).
Speaking of mock drafts, Hoopsworld.com has a panel of four writers offering their picks -- two of the four include Jones in the first round, one 24th and one 30th.
-- It's premium Insider content, but ESPN.com's David Thorpe has a good writeup on Jones and his position on the first-round bubble. "Don't be surprised when Jones is still available on draft night as the first round is ending," he writes. "But, by the same token, don't be surprised when he earns a high ranking in next year's Rookie Report."
