Freshman Jones piling up more honors
With 85 points in his last three games, USF freshman guard Dominique Jones has been named the national player of the week by The Sporting News, and he's also won Big East rookie of the week honors for the second week in a row.
Jones had back-to-back 30-point games in wins against Central Florida and Richmond -- the first Big East freshman to do that since Georgetown's Allen Iverson in 1994 -- then went for 25 in another big win against UAB.
"It’s always nice to win individual awards but the main thing is that we’re winning,” Jones said in a statement. “As long as the team keeps winning I’ll be happy. That is more important than individual awards.”
On the women's side, junior center Jessica Lawson was named to the Big East honor roll after averaging 20.5 points in USF's last two wins.
