Gameday: USF opens Big East play at Pittsburgh
Good morning from Chicago -- I've got an hour's layover here between flights to Pittsburgh. There was a wonderful hint of cool weather coming off the plane, a preview of what the Bulls will have tonight at Heinz Field, with temperatures likely in the high 50s at kickoff. There's also a solid chance of rain -- as much as 50 percent by the end of the game according to Weather.com.
Ran into fellow Times writers Marc Topkin and Joe Smith and columnist Gary Shelton in the Tampa airport -- all on their way to Texas after an amazing finish to the Rays' regular season last night. Marc and Joe didn't even sleep after the late night and early flight -- I won't complain about my deadline situation tonight after seeing their postseason picture radically change after midnight last night. Great stuff in today's Times, capturing the unbelievable finish to an unbelievable finish in the Rays' season.
For our Bulls advance in today's paper, we wrote about Darrell Scott and the family ties that helped bring him from California back to his native Florida. With 348 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns in his first four games, he's in position to be USF's first 1,000-yard rusher since Andre Hall in 2005, and on pace to break the school's single-season touchdowns record.
ESPN.com's Andrea Adelson has a great feature on USF safety Jerrell Young and the brother he lost 11 years ago, still a daily source of inspiration for one of the Bulls' co-captains.
We'll have lots more later today once we're settled in Pittsburgh, and of course we'll be live-blogging from the game as well.
