Genshaft: USF coaching search 'very encouraging'

Here's this from the Times' Tia Mitchell -- rare to get Genshaft answering questions from reporters on USF football. The Big East bowl comments at the end are curious. ...

After a press conference on university funding, USF President Judy Genshaft answered questions about the search for a new football coach and whether USF was satisfied remaining in the Big East Conference.

-- About the coach's search: “We are receiving information and I wouldn't say applications. We are receiving a lot of names. We are very, very encouraged by the number of people that are interested in the position and I’m going to wait to hear from our athletic director about narrowing down the huge numbers that we’ve gotten. So it’s very encouraging.”

-- A different person asks about the future of Bulls football: "We have a great future. We don’t know who our coach is going to be, but we have a great future. The search is amazing. People have been calling and giving us names of those who are very, very interested. Really, really high level people and we’re very optimistic.”

-- About whether athletics could help subsidize other university costs: “We know out of all the football teams in the country there are only about 20 that generate money. And of those 20 that generate money, many of the universities put some of those dollars back into the classroom. So we would welcome the opportunity to have a football program that also generates money so that we can put it back in the classroom and keep tuition and keep fees low.”

-- Are you happy in the Big East? “We’re very pleased with the Big East. It’s a national conference. It’s a conference of opportunity. And it goes throughout the United States. We probably will be expanding in the West for football-only schools. And we’re now in the process of media negotiations. ... We are guaranteed a bowl. It will either be on Jan. 1 or New Year’s Eve but we are guaranteed a yearly bowl. Probably the Fiesta or the Cotton Bowl.”
