Giddins, Popek officially out for Stony Brook
The Big East is now asking its schools to issue an NFL-style injury report on Thursday of each game week (or 48 hours before kickoff with non-Saturday games) and USF sent out its first Thursday, with news that defensive end Ryne Giddins will miss Saturday's opener against Stony Brook with a painful blister on his right foot.
Giddins was on crutches Wednesday to keep his weight off the blister, so it's hardly a surprise. Nor is news that tackle Mark Popek will also miss the game as he recovers from a sprained knee -- it's reasonable to think both could play next week at Florida. Receivers A.J. Love and Sterling Griffin, who are both likely a month from returning from their injuries, were also listed as being out.
As for the probable-questionable-doubtful listings on the injury report, USF had no players for any of those categories, which is to say running back Mo Plancher and linebacker Sam Barrington shouldn't be limited by the shoulder injuries that sidelined them in the preseason.
