Gilchrist's 23 leads Bulls past Ga. Southern
I wasn't able to make it to the men's basketball game this afternoon, but here's what happened in the Sun Dome:
Junior forward Augustus Gilchrist was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field on the way to a 23-point game, leading USF to a 76-63 home win against Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon before an announced crowd of 2,722 in the Sun Dome.
Gilchrist, who matched the second-best total of his Bulls career, led four USF players scoring in double digits. Sophomore forward Toarlyn Fitzpatrick, who had totaled six points in the first three games, matched a career high with 13 points, adding a game-high nine rebounds in just 16 minutes off the bench. Senior center Jarrid Famous had 12 points, and sophomore guard Jawanza Poland added 10. Point guard Anthony Crater had seven assists, his best total in two seasons with the Bulls.
The Bulls (2-2) bounced back following a loss at Central Florida on Thursday, jumping out to a 12-2 lead and staying in control. USF's perimeter defense improved, as Georgia Southern (2-2) went 2-for-14 on 3-point attempts. The game serves as the opening round of the South Padre Island Invitational -- the Bulls will be in Texas this weekend to play BYU and either Texas Tech or St. Mary's to complete the tournament. The Bulls next play Tuesday night at home against Liberty.
