Greetings from Louisville

Good morning from Louisville, where it's overcast and looks to be chilly tonight, with temperatures dropping into the low 40s on Friday night. Expect tonight to be even colder.

First, want to send a link to our men's basketball story from Friday's win against South Carolina State, from Times writer Dave Murphy, showing how USF freshman guards Amu Saaka and Solomon Bozeman have made a strong showing in their first games. The perception in recruiting is that there isn't much to be found in the spring, but coaching changes in other programs opened up two playmakers for the Bulls.

Driving around town here, you see a lot of signage for Louisville -- all the signs brand the town as "The Ville" and tout Louisville as America's best college sports town. It's a reminder of one major difference between Louisville and USF -- the Cardinals have so, so little to compete with for fans' spending dollars here. Aside from the horses, which have only so much overlap with major college sports, and a Triple-A minor-league baseball team, they've got a huge sports market to themselves. Lexington is far enough away that I'd consider it like Georgia and Georgia Tech, where the state has two big programs and enough fans to support both. USF has a lot more to fend off in its own city, so it's hard to compare the two as apples-to-apples situations. You can see there's a huge support for the Cardinals here, and that support is a big reason why the program has been able to put so much money into improving facilities in the last five years or so.

I'll check back in by midafternoon ... Questions? Thoughts? Send 'em in ...
