Grothe continues tryout with Arena's Storm tonight

Former USF quarterback Matt Grothe has yet to take a snap as a pro, but he's had workouts and short stints with the NFL, UFL and CFL -- this week, he's hoping to add the Arena Football League to that list.

He's back in Tampa for a two-day workout with the Tampa Bay Storm, which already has a strong USF presence. Grothe has a second workout with the team tonight -- his former backup at USF, Grant Gregory, was the Storm starter until suffering a foot injury last month. Brian Zbydniewski has started the last five games for Tampa Bay, which also has a third QB on roster in rookie Danny Southwick.

-- Speaking of former Bulls in indoor football, receiver Jackie Chambers has latched on with the Tri-Cities Fever of the Indoor Football League, getting a touchdown in his first game.

-- USF will host its annual Junior Bulls Football Camp on June 17-19, open to students entering first through eighth grade. Cost is $125 -- for more information, visit GoUSFbulls.com or contact Pat Burnham at (813) 974-9198. USF also has a High School Position camp June 19-22, with the first Sling and Shoot 7-on-7 camp (with a Big Man camp) this weekend.

-- From the Obscure Stat Department, preview magazine guru Phil Steele has crunched the numbers on college football teams and their "combined experience" entering the season -- USF ranks fourth in the Big East and 62nd nationally by his calculations. USF is also fourth in the league in returning starts on the offensive line, another telling statistic.

-- More rounding up: USF had done well just to get on the short list for transferring Arizona point guard Lamont "MoMo" Jones, but he opted for Iona over several Big East suitors. With Martin Breunig picking Washington, that's two late calls that would have been nice for the Bulls, but didn't fall their way.
