Grothe still drawing odds for Heisman

Correspondent Joe Rienzi reports from the "Bull Bowl":

The USF football team had its “Bull Bowl,” a scrimmage among the scout team players, Thursday. Although there wasn’t an official score, the offenses — led by freshmen quarterbacks B.J. Daniels and Evan Landi — were declared the winners by coach Jim Leavitt.

“I thought we did a lot of good things offensively,” he said. “I can’t really say much about the defense because I thought the offense had their way a little bit.”

Both Daniels and Landi were impressive, Leavitt said.

“B.J. Daniels did outstanding,” Leavitt said. “There’s really not a lot of people on the field that can keep up with him. I thought (Landi) did good too. I’m really happy with our two freshmen quarterbacks.”

Daniels threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to junior Antwon Hanks and had a 30-yard run that gave the Bulls a first down.

Landi led USF to a touchdown also, scoring on a quarterback sneak on fourth and goal from the 1-yard line.

Even with the strong play of Daniels and Landi, Leavitt said he’d like to redshirt both players.

“We’ll try to redshirt both of those guys if we can,” he said. “But we’re trying to keep B.J. ready.”
On a throw from Daniels, redshirt freshman WR Jeffery Wilson sustained a shoulder injury. He was getting work done by the training staff to his right shoulder on the sideline, and was taken by golf cart back to the athletics building.
