Hall of Fame: Ex-AD Bowers 'left a legacy'

16

September

A big part of this week's USF notebook is the inaugural induction to USF's Athletics Hall of Fame, including the late Dick Bowers, who was athletic director from 1966-82, leading the program from its infancy to much of what is established now on campus.

Basketball greats Charlie Bradley and Wanda Guyton may be the most recognizable of the first class, but Bowers helped set USF athletics in motion, launching most of the teams that play today, helping establish the first conference affiliations and helping build the Sun Dome. Madge Bowers, his wife of 48 years, also said that her husband had championed the merits of a football program many years and many presidents before the Bulls were able to realize the benefits and exposure the sport has brought to campus.
