Heath doesn't expect Gilchrist back with team
First, here's video of Stan Heath in postgame -- he addresses Gilchrist around the 2:20 mark:
TAMPA -- USF coach Stan Heath said he still hasn't talked to junior forward Augustus Gilchrist and doesn't expect him to return to the Bulls, who beat Auburn 61-49 on Wednesday night in their second game without him.
"Right now, he's not with the team and we're moving forward," Heath said. "I'll never say never, but it just appears we're going in two different directions. I'll get a final decision (Thursday), but I'd like to get some closure hopefully."
Gilchrist hasn't been with the team since Friday, not traveling for a loss at Kent State, then speaking only briefly with Heath this week, saying he wanted to talk to his parents before he talked with Heath. USF's top returning scorer from last season, Gilchrist's numbers have dropped off this season, but at 10.7 points per game, he was still counted on as a starter and the team's leading scorer until his departure.
"I don't want to throw anybody to the side, but it's a team. The team is the most important to me, having everybody on the same page, everybody with two feet in the circle," Heath said. "Nobody is bigger than the program. That's just the way I feel. If you're not here, you're not in the locker room, then you're not with the team."
Heath said it was Gilchrist's decision to step away from the team, and that there was little he could tell his coach now to change his future with the Bulls.
"I want to hear what he has to say," Heath said. "There's going to be closure to this thing. I would hope we spend time first, but I can't allow this to continue."
