Like Holtz, Fitch has close ties to Meyer
We'll have more later this week on the friendship between Skip Holtz and Urban Meyer, which goes back 20 years to Meyer following Holtz as receivers coach at Colorado State in 1990. But there's another friendship that goes back even farther, between USF offensive coordinator Todd Fitch and Meyer, who have known each other since Fitch's college days at Ohio Wesleyan in the mid-1980s.
Fitch's college roommate grew up with Meyer, and the two followed each other's careers as young coaches, going to graduate school at Ohio State at the same time. When the running backs job at Colorado State came open after the 1991 season, Meyer recommended Fitch for the job.
"We were good friends, kind of grew up in coaching together, that kind of thing," Fitch said. "He was the guy who called me and said, 'Hey, we have a job. Are you interested in taking the job?' He was the one who set me up with the interview with Coach (Earle) Bruce, but we have a relationship that goes back pretty far."
Fitch left Colorado State to join Skip Holtz's staff at Connecticut two years later, and the only time he hasn't worked with Holtz since then was from 2004-06, when he worked as quarterbacks coach at Iowa State. His head coach there was Dan McCarney, who he'll see this weekend as the defensive line coach at Florida.
"Unfortunately, we have to play each other, because if it were just a social gathering, we'd have a great time," Fitch said. "I think it's going to be a little bit more competitive."
