Holtz says Bulls may move WR to RB for depth

A year after Skip Holtz moved several players to wide receiver in search for help at the position, USF's depth there is strong enough that Holtz said he might move a receiver to running back to help the Bulls' depth in the backfield.

After Saturday's scrimmage, when asked about his search for a No. 3 runner to follow Demetris Murray and Darrell Scott, Holtz mentioned sophomore Marcus Shaw (who rushed for 51 yards on 13 carries in the scrimmage) but said there are other options being considered as well.

"Marcus Shaw is a very talented young man," Holtz said. "He can do a lot of good things. I thought he had an excellent day. He's had a little bit of trouble holding onto the ball the last maybe week in camp where he seems to put the ball on the ground. He's very talented; right now, he's just young. Will it be the consistency maybe of a Bradley Battles, who will be in that boat? Will it be a young guy like Willie Davis? We even have options of moving a Joel Miller back to tailback. You could have the option of moving Lindsey Lamar back to tailback. You could put Victor Marc back at tailback. We've got some options there right now. We're looking at it. From what you saw on the field, I thought Marcus Shaw had a really nice day today."

Miller and Lamar both worked at running back before shifting to receiver last year, and Marc (who has looked solid in camp) has bounced around from quarterback to safety to running back and receiver. Marc, who has seen snaps as an H-back this fall, had a cameo in the backfield Saturday, gaining 4 yards on his only carry. Miller, even as a receiver, worked at running back in USF's option package last fall.

USF now has considerable depth at receiver, so such a move might take someone not in the top eight at receiver (and as such, unlikely to get on the field much) and move them as high as third or fourth at running back if the move takes.

USF has Sunday off, but coaches should be able to speak more about players who looked good Saturday on tape after Monday's workouts.
