Holtzes and Notre Dame: Faith, family, football

louskip1.jpgFormer Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz will be in town Monday night for USF's Football Kickoff Dinner, but we started to look ahead to the Bulls' opener at Notre Dame in Sunday's paper, with a story on Skip and Lou and how they first came to be in South Bend.

We were able to spend an hour with Lou in his Orlando home last week, and there were no shortage of great Skip stories we'll share over the next two weeks -- this feature mentions the fact that he was good enough in basketball he could have been a walk-on at North Carolina, playing for Dean Smith alongside Michael Jordan. We talked with two other Notre Dame graduates in the Holtz family -- his sister Liz and brother Kevin -- and will have more from them as well.

skiplou2.jpgThe Notre Dame memories also gave us an excuse to dig up old pictures of Skip from his South Bend days -- we'll be posting those as well. The main picture on the front of Sunday's sports section (and here) was shared by Holtz's wife, Jennifer, while the photo inside showing Lou and Skip on the sideline together is part of Notre Dame's archives.

We'll have more South Bend stories this week and next, talking to the Notre Dame alum who considers Skip his "adopted son," his playing days as a Fighting Irish walk-on and more about Holtz's unsung basketball skills on campus.
