Hoops site puts USF football atop Big East

It's coming from a basketball site, but Collegehoopsnet.com is picking USF to win the Big East, taking the Bulls to emerge from a logjam of parity atop the conference.

"With this being the last hurrah for team leaders Matt Grothe and George Selvie, expect the hunger for a conference title to reach a new level," they write.

Grothe and Selvie are their picks for the league's top offensive and defensive player -- USF would probably have to win the league to pull off that sweep -- and they address how wide-open the league will be: "Six teams have a realistic shot on paper to win the Big East. Each team also has a glaring hole to fill, so whoever does the best job of solving their particular riddle will win the conference."

-- Another Big East preview, this from Walker Sports at Bleacherreport.com. "The Bulls are the greatest underachieving team the Big East has ever seen," they write. Later: "I find it hard to believe the Bulls will have the mental discipline to stay focus (sic) for the whole season and finish what they started."

-- Soccer alert! Good profile on USF standout Zak Boggs from the school's official site. Academically, he's the most decorated athlete on campus, and has even bigger things ahead.

-- The Orlando Sentinel has a recruiting update on Tampa Catholic's Christian Green, with USF still in the picture, keeping up with Florida State, Florida and Georgia.

-- The Naples Daily News has more on the scheduling goof that had USF men's basketball announcing a game with Florida Gulf Coast, only to find out that FGCU never signed the contract. Coach Stan Heath was "miffed" initially, they write, attributing the communication problem to USF's changeover in coaching staff.

-- One of those rankings that's completely subjective, so hard to argue, but USF's student newspaper, The Oracle, ranks the top 10 USF athletes for 2008-09 with ... women's basketball senior guard Shantia Grace topping the list.

-- SlamOnline.com drools all over USF guard Dominique Jones in a feature I've seen posted on a few other blogs -- Jones was "the most underrated, underappreciated guard in the Big East" last season ... has "dieseled-up, tattoo-drenched arms" ... "chiseled" ... "was a veritable batman for the Bulls last season" ... "a cyborg in Nikes."

-- Tomahawknation.com profiles USF's defense as part of its "Nole Your Opponent" series.

-- Haven't yet booked my flight to Western Kentucky for USF's Sept. 12 football game, but I understand the usual thing to do is fly into Nashville, Tenn., and make the hour's drive north to Bowling Green, Ky. With that in mind, I share that Western Kentucky and Kentucky have signed a four-game series, with two games in Lexington and two games in Nashville, where the Wildcats have built a following from recent Music Bowl appearances. Looks like USF is still the only BCS program to give WKU a home-and-home -- they have 2-for-1 deals with Indiana and Iowa State in place, with the Hoosiers coming in 2010 and the Cyclones in 2015.
