Hoyas hand USF women home loss, 86-68
Rough night for USF women's basketball, which looked bad on both ends of the court in taking an 86-68 loss to Georgetown in the Sun Dome. The loss drops USF (15-6) to 2-5 in Big East play with a trip to Rutgers up next weekend -- can the Bulls dig out of this hole to salvage a .500 conference record so they'll have a shot at the NCAA Tournament?
As they have in all their conference losses, the Bulls struggled with 3-point shooting, hitting just 7 of 33 attempts beyond the arc. USF hit just 31 percent of its shots while allowing Georgetown (13-6, 3-3) to shoot better than 55 percent. The Bulls were as close as nine points with four minutes to play, but couldn't get consistent defensive stops against the Hoyas at any point down the stretch.
USF and Georgetown's women's basketball teams and their coaches paid tribute to late N.C. State coach Kay Yow, who died Saturday at age 66 after battling breast cancer for 21 years.
USF's players wore pink ribbons on their uniforms above their left shoulders, and both coaches -- USF's Jose Fernandez and Georgetown's Terri Williams-Flournoy -- wore pink ribbons on their lapels, as did their assistant coaches.
