Injured tackle Popek on crutches at practice
I'm back in Tampa for two days, but sophomore tackle Mark Popek, who injured his right knee in practice Wednesday, was on crutches at the start of USF's afternoon practice Thursday, correspondent Jon Santucci reports from Vero Beach.
We should have a better sense of the severity of Popek's injury after Thursday's practice, when coach Skip Holtz addresses the media, as well as an update on tackle Jake Sims and tight end Jeff Hawkins, who have been held out of all the practices in Vero since complaining of headaches on Sunday. To guard against concussions, USF's trainers require a player to remain headache-free for 24 hours before returning to full contact in practice.
-- No official word from USF, but the official site for I-AA Stony Brook is listing the kickoff time for the Bulls' season opener on Sept. 4 as being 7 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium. That's now just 23 days away ...
-- Former USF receiver Taurus Johnson was waived by the Dolphins on Thursday, which leaves 12 former Bulls in NFL training camps.
