Jones scoreless as Bulls lose 60-43

We'd mentioned after learning of USF's men's basketball win Saturday against Murray State that guard Dominique Jones, with five 3-pointers, had found the outside shot he'd been sorely missing in USF's first eight games. So much for that ...

Jones went scoreless in 39 minutes, missing all 12 shots and not attempting a free throw in a 60-43 loss to Wright State in the San Juan Shootout. Fine game for Jesus Verdejo, who scored 26 in his native Puerto Rico, but the rest of the team totaled 17 points. Just like Jones, guard Mike Mercer went scoreless in 26 minutes, missing all six shots. Forward Gus Gilchrist was the second-leading scorer ... with four points. USF finishes its three-game set in San Juan with Oral Roberts on Monday.

-- One more men's note: Jamie Skeen, the big transfer from Wake Forest who visited USF and Seton Hall, will instead enroll at VCU, according to Adam Zagoria at Zagsblog.

On the other end of the basketball spectrum, USF's women's team scored 100 points for the fourth time this season, trouncing Southern 100-47. Coach Jose Fernandez won his 127th game at USF, putting him even with Bobby Paschal for the most wins in Bulls basketball history -- men's or women's. He'll have a chance to break that mark next week against Jackson State. Bulls forced 31 turnovers, had 27 assists and again had no players in for more than 24 minutes. Shantia Grace led the way with 17 points and seven assists (with just one turnover), and five teammates scored in double digits.

Barring anything huge, I'm going to take off from the blog until after Christmas -- hope everybody has a safe, happy holiday. I'll be back at it again next weekend ...
